SO, YOU WANT TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE…

You’re tired of the rat race.  You hate the idea that you work hard all day and still can’t seem to get ahead.  You are in debt.  You can’t provide the things you’d like for your family…whom you barely ever spend time with anyway because you’re at your job struggling just to be able to provide food and a roof over your family’s head.

One day you get an e-mail from some guy who has it all figured out.  He tells you how he used to be just like you, struggling, time poor, money poor, trying to provide for his family, working at a dead-end job until…

He learned the SECRET of making money online.

You watch the video and read the sales copy.  He’s surrounded by his wonderful family in some tropical paradise.  He’s not bragging, but he is thankful to be making over $1,000 per day and barely even working.  Sure, he has to log into his websites daily and do a few simple things, but after just a couple of hours of tweaking, checking, and clicking he’s off to a restaurant to enjoy steak and lobster before going horseback riding.

He’s spent the last six months touring the world with his family like this…and he wants to show you how to do it too!

He wants to reveal that secret wealth building formula to you and it is available for just a few more hours at an unbelievably low price of $7.95!

So, you say, “Seven bucks.  What do I have to lose.  I’ll bite.”

You click the link and get your credit card out….but wait…there’s more!

Sure the $7.95 thing will work perfectly, but if you want to really get this thing working FAST, well there’s another thing that’s just $27 that will put you so much ahead of the curve and time is of the essence.  And then if you REALLY want to work efficiently, you’ll get the additional $47 component.

At the end of your spending spree, you’ve spent around $80, but you are armed to the teeth, ready for success!

(One of the gurus says of his ridiculously long sales funnel, “As long as they keep buying, I keep selling.”)

You roll up your sleeves and get ready for the cash to roll in for your minimal efforts.

For the first five days or so you are excited and driven.  Your spouse and kids wonder what has gotten into you.  You’re squirreled away in your den or corner of the basement mesmerized by the glow of your computer.

  • You are excited about the prospect of having extra money.
  • You can’t wait to put in your notice at your job.
  • You are planning your first vacation in your head.
  • You’re looking forward to spending some quality time with your kids.
  • You’ve already spent some of your new money.
  • It feels good to be out of debt and to be ahead of the curve for the first time in a long time.
  • The crushing weight of debt is lifting from your shoulders.

Then reality begins to set in…

It doesn’t seem quite so simple as the guy made it sound in the video.  That analysis is pretty tricky.  You need a piece of software to automate things (which the video guy provides an affiliate link to.  It’s about $75, but it will be well worth the investment–this is the cost of doing business.  You’ll write it off on your taxes.).

Then you need list management software.

And a website.

You need to create a squeeze page.  But first….what IS a “squeeze page”?

After a few weeks (or months if you stick it out that long), you are LIVE!  Your empire is built!  You have your flash-enabled, e-commerce-ready website open for business.  But…all you hear are crickets.  Where’s all the traffic?  You need a steady stream of targeted inexpensive, real human traffic with wallets open ready to buy your wares.

It gets more and more complex.  You spend hours looking at “how to” videos on Youtube trying to figure things out.

Traffic is the lifeblood of sales.  If you can’t get people to see your offer, it doesn’t matter how good your offer is.  You’re invisible.

Then, one day you get an e-mail from the same guy who sold you the original course for $7.95.  He has a new coaching program.  He feels your pain. He knows how hard it is to go it alone and try to figure all this complex stuff out on your own.  Here’s the deal, he has just a few spaces left in his coaching program.  He will personally take you by the hand and take you through the process.  He will make you successful.  You’ll look over his shoulder and watch what he does and you’ll be able to do it too!

It’s just $4,995 (or $2,000, or $7,000, or whatever he can get from you…)

You will have to apply to see if you’re a good fit to work together.  The guru cannot help everyone.  But if you get in, your road to wealth will almost be assured (but not completely assured when you read the fine print…).

So…..you’re so close now you can taste success!  Just $5,000.  What is that in the big scheme of things?  It will seem like nothing when you’re in that tropical paradise with your family and you have finally made it!

You spring for the personal coaching.

You go through the sessions.

But something is STILL missing!  You’re not seeing the same big checks as the guru…

ARE YOU DISCOURAGED YET?  DON’T THROW IN THE TOWEL!

Does the previous story sound familiar at all?

So, don’t think that I’m trying to tell you to give up on making your living online.

Don’t look at your previous setbacks, failures, and fumbles as defeats.  You’ve probably heard that Thomas Edison made about 1,000 unsuccessful attempts before he invented a successful light bulb.  I read that when a reporter asked him how it felt to fail 1,000 times, Edison replied, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times.  The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”

Quitting should not be an option.  You just need to focus on one thing, and chip away at it until it makes you money!

Listen I WANT you to succeed.  I might even want you to succeed more than YOU want you to succeed!

I’m writing this article to HELP you.  I want you to snap out of your funk.  I want you to ignore all of your friends and relatives who want you to give up on this silly idea of generating passive income.  I want you to stop listening to all the naysayers who want you to roll over and get back in line and be happy with your meager salary for 50 hours of hard labor.

However….

I also want to rescue you from the cycle of purchasing “shiny objects” that promise fast riches for little work.

Let me tell you the REAL SECRET: Building ANY business takes a lot of studying, hard work, coordination, focus, discipline, dedication, and, yes, even some money!

If it was really as easy as that guru with the $7.95 system said it was, everyone would be doing it.

But think about this: If it was REALLY that easy, everyone would be doing it, the market would be saturated, and there wouldn’t be an opportunity for YOU to make any money.

In the next part of this article, I’m going to help you start to think like the guru and as a little exercise toward that end, I want you to start watching your e-mail for the next week.  I want you to begin observing what the guru is DOING (as opposed to what they are proposing that you do).

Think back about the process of how YOU purchased products.  How did you hear about the offer?  Did you find it through a search engine?  Did an offer simply appear in your e-mail in-box because you signed up for someone’s e-mail list?  Did you see an offer on a billboard?

ONLINE OR OFFLINE: BUSINESS IS BUSINESS

Now, let’s discuss business in general.

People exchange money for just 2 things:

1) Products

2) Services

That’s it.

You’re either providing a product, whether it’s a digital e-book, a piece of software code, or a thing you can hold with your hands like a car, or a wrench, or a golf club.  Or… you’re providing a service, like designing a webpage, or changing brake pads, or weeding a garden.

Now, when someone parts with their money for a product or service, they want to feel like they have received adequate value in the exchange.

Let me ask you.  If you paid $1,720 for an oil change today, would you feel that you had received a good value?  My guess is probably not because the average oil change at a dealership is around $30 in my area.

Just to let you know my own thoughts on the matter, I try to always over deliver on products and services.  I’ll throw in a free, unadvertised bonus.  I’ll give you something for free, or something extra.  You know, I love to help people and talk about marketing.  I probably give away more stuff for free in conversation or e-mail than I should.  🙂  If you e-mail me or engage me, I’m going to give away the farm.  That’s just me.

There are some folks out there who make it sound like you can throw a mediocre report together and make millions.  Well, maybe if you are GREAT at marketing you can, and that would be your strength.  But, really, how long do you think you can last doing that sort of thing?  So, my first piece of advice for the beginning entrepreneur is to over deliver in everything you do online or offline.  Be willing to go the extra mile.  Do your best.  Give your customers more than they bargained for.

Don’t you feel good when you go to a restaurant and the owner comes out and gives you a complimentary dessert?  Or a taste of some dish he’s testing out?  Or when the guy doing your oil change notices you have a burned out brake light and just goes ahead and fixes it for free?  You remember those things and they build loyalty.

Think about how you can build that sort of value into your own business.

BUT HOW DO I MAKE MONEY ONLINE????

That’s what everyone asks when they’re first starting out.

That’s your question, right?  That’s why you’ve put up with me droning on for 1,857 words so far.

“How can I get up in this joint and make some moooonnnney!????”

So, I’m going to tell you that you’re asking the wrong question.

First, there is no definitive way to “make money” on the Internet.

Just like there is no definitive way to make money on Main Street in your hometown, there is no single definitive way to make money on the Internet. The Internet is just a network of digital communication.  Think of the Internet like a “digital highway.”  Then, compare it to the streets in your hometown.  When you travel down the main street of your city, or cruise around the shopping mall do you think, “How can these city streets make me money?”

No.  You think in terms of business.

You think about what you would like to do.  You think about what interests you. You think about what you’re good at and how you might make money at it.

Of course, we all want to be compensated well, and go on long vacations, and live the life of our dreams.  We want time freedom to pursue our passions.  Wow.  Maybe we can even turn our PASSIONS into what we do for a living….

Stay with me now.

If you want to live the life of your dreams, you have to work from the back to the front.  As Stephen Covey (the author of “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”) would say, “Begin with the end in mind.”

The first thing you must ask yourself is:

What can I do for people so well that they would be willing to pay me for it?

Forget about making money.  Why would anyone want to give you any money anyway?

When I was in real estate sales, my mentor told me to imagine everyone walking around with a sign hanging on their neck that read, “What can you do for me?”  Your clients don’t care about what you need.  They don’t care about you paying your mortgage, where you want to go on vacation, or putting your kids through college.

In order to make money, you need to solve a problem for someone.  The more people who have the problem, the more people you can help, the bigger your pool of potential customers.

If you walk around a popular shopping center, you’ll see all sorts of businesses.  There are restaurants, health food stores, shoe repair stores, tailors, supermarkets, real estate offices, title service, gyms, beauty salons and barber shops, businesses that help you sell on e-Bay, computer sales and repair, bicycle shops, jewelers, and many other shops offering goods and services.

Each of these different businesses requires a different technical skill set.

What is your skill set?  What do you do well?  What do you enjoy?

If you start thinking along these lines and then apply it to the online world, you will begin to narrow your focus.  You will begin to develop an actual business idea that can be implemented using the Internet.

As you think about the problem and solution, think about how you can SYSTEMIZE the solution and use the Internet to automate the entire process. In fact, look at how others are solving the problem already.  It’s easier to “build a better mousetrap” than to “reinvent the wheel.” (By the way, that one sentence was worth as much as some expensive make money online courses…)

Can your solution be delivered as an e-book?  Or a video?  Or a computer program?  Or can the product be ordered through a third party and drop shipped to your customer’s address without your having to handle the product?  If you can deliver a solution using one of those methods, you have the makings of a winning business idea.  Those are the sorts of things that can be profitably run by one person.

Then, think about this: If you can solve one problem and the business is running virtually on autopilot, what is to stop you from setting up a second Internet business.  Then a third.  And a fourth…

Multiple streams of income.

ROME WASN’T BUILT IN A DAY.

Your business won’t be either.

Everyone wants to buy the definitive make money online package and be raking in the dough tomorrow.

One of my mentors, who has been making his living online since 2006 and who studied Internet marketing for years before finally making money, recently said “I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I have yet to see any system that brought the buyer money overnight with almost no work.  I’m still looking for that system.”

Another one of my mentors once said bluntly, “Look, I’m not going to give away all the secrets to my multi-million dollar empire for seven bucks!”

Consider too that the product creator is often giving affiliates 100% commission on the front end product.  If he’s giving away 100% of the commission on the front end, the only way for him to make money is to sell something on the back end, and that is usually high-priced coaching that can range from the hundreds to the thousands of dollars.  The $7 package is designed to give you just enough information to inspire you to purchase the upsell, or enhancement, or coaching program.

This may not be what you want to hear, but it’s the truth.

You know, if you want to be a doctor, you don’t enroll at Harvard Medical School, attend classes for a week, and then go hang your shingle out on week number two.  No one wants a doctor with one week of medical school under their belt.  Right?

Similarly, if you buy a money-making package on the Internet today, I would not put in my two-week notice at my job tomorrow.  You may learn a system, but you will need to know how to perfect it to make it work for you.  You’ll need to learn how to drive traffic to your product or service.   You’ll need to be able to write compelling sales copy.  You’ll need to attract customers and sell them your product.

Your business may go through several stages.  One gentleman I know started a computer repair service where he would go to the customer’s site and perform the repair.  He was almost put out of business by another company that did most of its repair service by logging into the customer’s computer remotely.  He had to adjust to be competitive and take advantage of new technology.  As he went on, he realized that he would be more profitable meeting another need.  His business morphed several times and today looks nothing like his original plan.  This is why you need to keep an open mind and adjust your business model as necessary.

That last paragraph may be the most important part of this entire article.  Please take note.

ARE YOU PLAYING TO YOUR STRENGTHS?

Doing business online is much the same as doing business in a brick and mortar establishment.

There are many, many different services.  Some require creative talents, some require analytical skills, all of them require ingenuity, business acumen, discipline, and perseverance.

You can connect people who are interested in dogs, make funny cat videos, create a forum for enthusiasts of the Triumph TR-6, create a series of saxophone lessons, teach people how to sing, or help people advertise their brick and mortar businesses on the Internet.

Some business models require one to hustle–to go out and about and sell people on your business like Steve Jobs did with Apple, some require the skills of an accountant and the ability to delve into minute details.  Some require a high degree of creativity, while others require specialized technical skills.

If the idea of creating a squeeze page frightens you, then why on Earth are you trying to start a business creating squeeze pages just because some “guru” told you that it’s the way to make money online?  Good grief, find someone on Fiverr.com and let them create your squeeze page for five bucks!

The fact is, there are lots and lots of ways to make money online and offline and you need to pair your own natural interests and abilities to the job. Do the things you’re good at, and delegate the things you’re not good at.

In fact, you should make it your business to delegate everything, as much as possible.  If your strength is coordination and delegation, you can be successful at any endeavor you choose.

Why don’t you get out a simple legal pad right now and make a list of your strengths?  A list of what you like to do combined with things you are great at doing.

Look, you are trying to get away from a job you hate, right?  So, don’t create a job for yourself that may require even more of your time that you absolutely hate!  If you do something you love, you will be passionate about it, and it won’t even seem like work.  Remember this: “If you do what you love, you’ll never work another day in your life!

This will make you unstoppable!

LEVERAGE: THE REASON EVERY BUSINESS SHOULD HAVE AN ONLINE COMPONENT

When people talk about “making money online” usually what they are thinking about is the ability to leverage their time by using this communication medium to get their marketing message out 24/7/365 and automate the sales process.

Frankly, it’s this aspect of automation that allows a lone individual or small team to make a LOT of money.  Consider this: You have almost zero overhead because you can run your entire operation on a laptop computer.  Then, once everything is set up on the front end you can run virtually on autopilot after you figure out the most cost effective way to drive massive traffic to your offer.

When you have a sales page online–whatever it is you’re selling–you have a tireless salesman working for you every hour of the day, rain or shine, who never asks for overtime pay.

In addition, with an automated sales and delivery process, you have an automated sales clerk who collects money for you, prepares the order for delivery, and finally delivers it directly to your customer (either by digital means, or through drop shipping of a physical product).

Leverage allows you to multiply your own efforts and get more done on autopilot than you could do with your own efforts alone.

Let’s face it, you can only get so much accomplished.  You’re limited by your own, er, limitations.  You only have so many hours to work.  You need to eat, to sleep, and to catch up on the “2 Traveling Dogs” blog. But with leverage you can extend your own hours.  You can sell 24/7.  You can collect money 24/7.  You can deliver products 24/7.

All of a sudden, you can be everywhere at once.  Do you remember your mom telling you, “I only have two hands!”  Well, that is no longer an excuse for her lack of productivity!

With leverage, your mom can be making sales while picking up the dry cleaning!

In fact, this is what makes the Internet such an awesome avenue to transact business.

If you have a product or service that can be delivered digitally, you can create your sales page (your salesman), set up a system to collect money (your sales clerk), and automatically ship the product by download or e-mail (your delivery driver).  This is why businesses love using the Internet for sales! You set up your product or service one time and continue to generate revenue over and over and over again.  Your employees are virtual.  They never get sick and never ask for a raise.  In fact, because of innovation and competition, the cost of automation services is actually going down so your virtual employees take a pay cut every year without complaint!!!

This use of leverage is the aspect of Internet marketing that every guru sells you on with their system, and it is certainly a positive and powerful aspect.  But somehow it seems that you never make any substantial money when you implement the guru’s system.  You’re missing something, it seems.  Look, I’m not here to bash the gurus, the folks who have been wildly successful in making money on the Internet, but what I’m saying is that you’re not getting the entire story.  You need to watch what they are DOING in addition to what they are selling.  Chances are, the system they are selling you is slightly different than the system they themselves are using.

They may have taught you everything you know…but they didn’t teach you everything they know!

SCALING: START SMALL, GROW HUGE!

In the brick and mortar world, the cost of starting a business can be prohibitive.  However, in the online world, you can test an idea for under $50. Once you determine there’s a market for your product, you can buy a little bit of traffic, if you have a good conversion rate (that is, a good percentage of people who see your offer who actually decide to whip out their credit card and buy), you can scale up quickly and make money.

If you can quickly take advantage of a trend or fad that’s selling, ramp up your marketing, and drive traffic to your hot offer, you can scale to infinite proportions.

This is how the fortunes are made.

Think about it.  Once your product is created, you have a high conversion sales page, your  automated money collection system is in place, and your automated delivery process is in place, all you need to do is get your message in front of the masses.  You are limited only by your budget to advertise. And if you reinvest some of your profits into advertising, then the sky is the limit.  You can tweak your advertising, perhaps you will need to spend a couple of hours each day analyzing, adjusting your spend, A/B testing your headlines, etc…

This is the power of scaling and it really does work.  It takes an up front investment of time, effort, education, and even some money.  A lot of courses being pushed out there make it seem like you can skip the work and get straight to the scaling, but that is simply not the case.
